Leeds Wildlife Photography Hide Workshop

Leeds Wildlife Photography Hide Workshop

Leeds Wildlife Photography Hides

This is a one to one workshop with a difference. We have access to not one, but two fantastic Wildlife Photography hides close to Leeds and also very conveniently situated for all the major motorway networks. Because the hides are situated in a very natural setting, close to a Lake, river, agricultural land and woodland, there are many different species that can and do visit on a daily basis. The hides are spacious enough for two Photographers and the various perches are set up around ten - 12 feet (approximately) away from the hides. There is also a reflection pool at the top hide. Bird species that regularly visit the hide include; Jays, Great Spotted Woodpeckers, Bullfinch, Greenfinch, Chaffinch, Bluetits, Great Tits, Long Tailed Tits, Robins and Song Thrush. At present there are also a pair of Sparrowhawks (male and female) visiting and hunting right in front of the hide, which can be a breath taking spectacle to witness. The male is the more regular visitor at the moment. This is a fantastic opportunity to get up close to nature in a situation where you can practice your skills of framing and focusing, safe in the knowledge that if you do mess up a shot or two, it won't be very long before you get a chance to have another go.

What equipment do I need?

You don't need the latest all singing and dancing camera and lens combination, as the birds are quite close to us. However, modern camera sensors are better equipped to deal with the issue of digital noise (grain), associated with using higher shutter speeds. Some of the more recent cameras (last five years or so) with faster focusing systems will just give you that bit more speed as they lock on to a subject. Lens focal lengths of 300 mm and above will be more suitable. A zoom can be preferable if you're looking to Photograph all the different species, as it can be tricky to successfully frame larger birds if they arrive unexpected and your focal length is actually too long.

What will I learn?

You should have a reasonable grasp of the Basics. If not I can quickly run through some of this with you, but unlike my basics for beginners day, the main aim of this workshop is for us to get shooting as soon as possible and for you to finish the day with a set of images that you are proud of. We'll cover all the different settings on your camera that will ensure you manage sharp, well exposed images of wild birds, both perched and possibly in flight or hovering.

How long does the day last?

A typical day lasts around 5 - 6 hours and there are booking discounts for Photographers wishing to form their own group (max group size 2 at the moment). Gift vouchers are also available if you’d like to buy the workshop for a friend or family member.

Can I book the hides without tuition?
