Yorkshire Coast - North and South

Yorkshire Coast - North and South

From the Tees mouth to the Humber estuary, the Yorkshire Coast stretches for just over 100 miles in length, and is home to three of thirty two nationally designated heritage Coastal areas to be found in England and Wales. These areas of coastline are designated by Natural England for their exceptional scenic quality and diverse landscape.

This is a new workshop aiming to cover all the very best areas along the beautiful Yorkshire Coast. Over three full days we’ll aim to photograph locations as far reaching as Saltburn in the north, with its fantastic Victorian Pier, sandy beach and antiquated funicular railway, right down to Flamborough Head in the south, with its white Limestone cliffs, sea stacks and arches. As this workshop is broken up over three days, we can really explore the whole area in fine detail, spending lots of time around the main centres of Whitby, Scarborough and Flamborough. Other areas we will likely visit could include Staithes, Runswick Bay, Port Mulgrave, Sandsend, Robin Hoods Bay, Ravenscar, Filey and Bridlington.

A typical day will last around ten hours, and see us photographing both the sunrise and the sunset. I have both Kase and Lee filter kits available for clients to try out if required, as well as a good selection of ND filters needed for long exposure photography. Depending on your experience and ability level, we can also cover subjects such as using graduated filters, shooting and processing panoramic images and shooting and bracketing exposures for blending. Much of our time over the three days will be spent looking at how to improve composition, and seeing potentially more dynamic images. This can include help with choosing the right lens for the scene, and using different crop factors (Aspect Ratio) for best results.

As this is the east coast, an early start is needed to make the best of our time here, and capture the very best of the light. However, we will be able to take a break at some point through the day for breakfast or lunch, and this is also a good time to review the mornings images and look at one or two of the steps used to process images in Photoshop and Lightroom.

As with all the courses and workshops, tuition on the Yorkshire Coast workshop is tailored to individual requirement by way of a short and fairly basic questionnaire. This makes the course ideal for any level of photographer, from complete beginners looking to master their DSLR and start shooting in modes other than auto, through to more experienced enthusiasts looking to learn more about composition, discover new locations or pick up one or two more advanced techniques or post-processing ideas.
