Torridon & Wester Ross Landscape Photography Workshop

Torridon & Wester Ross Landscape Photography Workshop

Come and explore the breathtaking scenery of Torridon and Wester Ross, in the beautiful north west highlands of Scotland. This is possibly about as close as we get to a real, ancient ‘wilderness’ here in the UK. Torridon is a landscape of jagged mountains, tranquil lochs and cascading rivers, all forged from the Lewisian Gneiss and Torridonian sandstone, some 2 billion years ago. Heading in an east to west direction from upper loch Torridon, and through Glen Torridon, you encounter the three main peaks of Beinn Alligin (also known as the jewelled mountain), Liathach and Beinn Eighe. Even by Scotland's high standards, the rugged contours, Scots Pine adorned buttresses and sharp peaks of these mountains make them instantly remarkable!

As dramatic as the mountains are, there are still many other areas that we can explore. Although officially, this workshop takes place over four days, I have secured our accommodation for a full week. This gives us a greater chance of making successful images (just in case the weather turns inclement). But it also means that we can explore slightly further afield. We will definitely be heading north to photograph one or two beautiful, desolate Marram fringed beaches. The geology and the patterns in the pristine, silver sands here, is amazing, so it’s a wonderful opportunity to get creative and indulge yourself in more abstract type images and smaller details.

Our base, (which has amazing views all of its’ own) will be Inveralligin, right on the shores of Upper Loch Torridon. There are three double rooms and two twin rooms available. The cost of the workshop is based on single occupancy, but if you would like to bring a partner along and share a room (photographer or non photographer) then please enquire regarding the cost. There are plenty of options for eating out on an evening, but I tend to also cook some meals during our stay. Staying flexible in this way means that we can react to the weather conditions, and be out making images at optimum times, rather than being tied to hotel meal times.

Walking on the workshop is not overly strenuous, and thankfully the mountains provide a fantastic focal point from ground level. The shorter days of winter mean that we’ll head out early enough to be in position to photograph the sunrise. We’ll take a break around the midpoint of the day, for a bite to eat and refreshments, and then we’ll continue shooting up until and possibly slightly after sunset.
